- <p> Count on CHRISTO, that eccentric Conceptual artist, to get
- people talking. His latest extravaganza, The Umbrellas, a
- six-year, $26 million effort, literally opened last week when
- 1,340 20-ft. blue umbrellas were unfurled along a 12-mile
- stretch in Japan, followed by 1,760 yellow umbrellas dotting 18
- miles of hills in California. Ironically, rain in Japan delayed
- the opening, but in sunny California the umbrellas hit big with
- tourists and local merchants. Some area residents, though,
- complained about traffic and pollution. Said Christo: "The
- project mirrors the people about it."
