  17. <p>     Count on CHRISTO, that eccentric Conceptual artist, to get
  18. people talking. His latest extravaganza, The Umbrellas, a
  19. six-year, $26 million effort, literally opened last week when
  20. 1,340 20-ft. blue umbrellas were unfurled along a 12-mile
  21. stretch in Japan, followed by 1,760 yellow umbrellas dotting 18
  22. miles of hills in California. Ironically, rain in Japan delayed
  23. the opening, but in sunny California the umbrellas hit big with
  24. tourists and local merchants. Some area residents, though,
  25. complained about traffic and pollution. Said Christo: "The
  26. project mirrors the people about it."
